Community and Culture

Since our founding in 1885, we have always been and will always be guided by our motto,
“The Other Fellow First,” and our mission:

“…to strive to develop moral, personal, and leadership skills in the spirit of fellowship and fun, enabling boys and girls to lead lives characterized by devotion to others.”

From its earliest days, Camp Dudley has been guided by the belief that a summer at Camp, away from the “real world,” should be available to as many children as possible, regardless of identity or background. Camp Kiniya, founded in 1919, shares that same spirit. This legacy is at the heart of everything we do, from how we welcome new campers to how we lead with care and compassion.

At Dudley and Kiniya, we know our greatest strength comes from the diverse people, perspectives, and lived experiences that shape our community. We remain committed to fostering a safe, inspiring, and equitable culture—one that brings out the best in everyone who sets foot on our campuses.

Belonging and inclusion are not side goals—they are essential threads woven through every program, policy, and plan. Our commitment demands continuous reflection and action, with the goal of creating lasting, measurable change. By listening, learning, sharing, and engaging, we work to build a place where every voice is heard, and every person feels respected, valued, and at home.

We continue to work with the intention to build a community that reflects a broad range of backgrounds and identities, including those historically underrepresented at our Camps. Over the last decade, we’ve doubled the number of campers of color. We’ve built strong partnerships with community partners across the U.S. and abroad, expanding access to camps for young people from all walks of life. During staff hiring and leadership selection, we intentionally seek individuals who represent a spectrum of identities, talents, and experiences.

To support economic diversity, we’ve expanded scholarship availability, awarding over $1 million every summer, and implemented an industry-leading tiered tuition model to make Camp more accessible to families from a wide range of income levels. We also offer Leadership Grants to ensure that financial limitations don’t prevent anyone from participating in our Leadership program.

In recent years, the Board has reached gender parity (11 of 21 current trustees are women) and includes trustees from diverse racial, ethnic, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds. Today, four trustees are African-American, one is AAPI, and two identify as openly LGBTQ. In 2025, Camp Dudley elected its first female, African-American trustee to lead our Board as Chair. We are proud of this progress, and we are fully committed to continuing it.
